Community Safety Summit

We host a quarterly Community Safety Summit, bringing together members of the York community who are invested in keeping our youth safe. At each summit, we move closer to our goal of closing gaps in service, connecting one another with resources, and fostering a safe community for our youth.

Recap: July 30 Safety Summit

In the most recent Community Safety Summit, we heard from Melissa Leathery, Executive Director of York County Human Services, regarding the impact the Big Beautiful Bill will have on benefits including SNAP and Medicaid. This opened up conversation about how service providers can fill in the gaps when the time comes.
We then took a deeper look into the challenges our young people face through case studies of real individuals.

Thank you to our speakers:
  • Rebecca Van Der Groef, LSW | CEO Hoffman Homes
  • Matthew VonStein | Director of Young Life York & Adams County
  • Emily Cover | Young Lives York City Area Coordinator
  • Kevin J. McManama | Emotional Support Social Studies Teacher, Paradise School

Safer Together Athletics

Safer Together League
Safer Together League

Since its inception, many high school students in the league report feeling more comfortable with law enforcement.

We envision a recreational, co-ed league that bridges the gap between various professions and students, fostering a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone involved. Our goal is to create teams comprised of police officers, medical and first responding workers, educators and counselors, families, and students (6th-12th grade & college age), encouraging them to spend quality time together and build strong connections within the community. We host several leagues: Basketball, Volleyball, and Pickleball.

Threat Assessment and Mitigation

Community Safety Summit
There are people in our community who are on the pathway to violence. They feel isolated – like outcasts who don’t belong. When they don’t have a proper support system, they tend to find connections in various online hate groups that promote revenge against a perceived grievance. In most cases, these individuals are teenagers – children – who are in need of some kind of support services. The TAMs team provides that level of intervention.

Thankfully, teachers, healthcare workers and bystanders have a place to refer these individuals: The TAMs Team (Threat Assessment and Mitigation) who then determine what support these individuals need to redirect them in a positive direction. Their system works. They keep at risk individuals from causing others harm through care, therapy, family support, and more.

The York County Safety Collab is closely involved with TAMS, providing funding, support, time and resources. A special thank you to the Powder Mill Foundation for their continued support of TAMs.

Community Block Party

Every year during Give Local York, York County Safety Collab partners with Logos Academy to host a block party right on King Street in Downtown York. We like to show our appreciation for our community by offering free entertainment such as a petting zoo, bug exhibit, face painting, dunk tanks and more. This is also a chance to meet local law enforcement, ask questions and connect.

Safer Together Chats

The York County Safety Collab produces a podcast focused on public safety, community well-being, and law enforcement in York County. In each episode, guests have informal yet meaningful conversations with people from law enforcement, social services, and the community to explore real-world challenges and collaborative solutions.
