Rebuilding Hope: How GVI is Changing Lives in York

As a Teen Safety Collab intern, I have had the privilege of witnessing transformation happen right in the heart of my community. This transformation is not the kind that is  announced in the headlines but the kind that begins quietly in the lives of people who thought no one would ever really show up for them. That is what Group Violence Initiative (GVI) has been doing in our community; showing up with support and solutions.

GVI is an organization that is made up of credible messengers, people who do not just talk about change, but have actually lived it. These are men and women who have walked down the same paths and experienced first-hand the struggles that they are now trying to help prevent. Instead of turning their backs on their community, they are looking to rebuild it.They deliver school supplies, provide computers, offer mentorship, and overall provide a positive outlook on the struggling youth in York City. What stuck with me the most is that this support is not just for those on the street, GVI goes into York County Prison to teach lessons, build character, and create hope where people think hope no longer exists.

From 2016 to 2021, there was misunderstanding in York. The public did not understand how law enforcement could simultaneously represent the people while also arresting those committing crimes, or “sending people to jail.” It felt like the police were out to get them without providing support — a trust breaker in the community. However, through the leadership of Commissioner Muldrow and the dedication of trauma responders like Tiff Lowe and her team, GVI is restoring that lost trust.

This year alone, York has experienced two homicides in a single week. Moments like this remind us of the urgency of GVI’s mission. But they also highlight the importance of community and connection. One of the most powerful things I have learned while working with the Teen Safety Collab is that people often reach out to GVI first before the police, because they know GVI will respond quickly with compassion and care.

Tiff Lowe said something that stayed with me “If you’re not good for yourself, you are not good for anyone.” She also said, “ I want my legacy to be that I have saved more kids than I have lost.” These aren’t just words, they are a goal and mission.

So to the youth of York: I want you to clearly understand that you matter. Your life has a purpose. If there is something in your life that you are truly passionate about, something you would do no matter the outcome, that is your calling. Chase it. Nurture it. The future of our city depends on the choices you make today; not just for your own well being, but for everyone who comes after you.

GVI and Teen Safety Collab are here not to control you, but to empower you. We believe in you. We are fighting for you. And we will keep showing up!
